Mathusalem

In looking for a space saving solution a few days ago, I ran across Mathusalem, "an open-source Mac utility that resides in your System Preferences and offers scheduled backups of selected folders to local drives, iDisk, WebDAV, AFP, FTP, SFTP or Amazon S3. You can chose to save your backups as sparse images, compressed .dmg, CPIO or ZIP archives. And since it runs in low-priority mode, Mathusalem doesn't tax your system."

Being beta software, it does have some limitations. As the familiar border of its icon suggests, Mathusalem is designed to work well with and along side Leopard's Time Machine and thus requires Mac OS X 10.5 to run.

Get your hard drive space back! Disk Inventory X is a FREE disk usage utility for Mac OS X 10.3 (and later). It shows the sizes of files and folders in a special graphical way called "treemaps" giving you a visual of how all that space is being used and allows you to seek out and delete files. I used it tonight and regained 22 gb on my HD!

DataCase

DataCase is a sweet new app. that turns your iPhone into a wireless flash drive and unlike FileMagnet, DataCase doesn't require that an app be installed on the Mac, plus it can also be used with a PC or Linux machine. The interface isn't very tasty, reminds me of a big wintergreen lifesaver, but it serves well in showing you relative space used and unused on your iPhone and is a breeze to use. Simply install the app, make sure your iPhone or iPod touch WiFi is turned on, search for your iPhone or iPod touch via the Shared list on your Mac, then connect and share files as you wish. You can add and organize subfolders giving them individual permissions and a whole lot more. DataCase is available on the iTunes app store for $6.99.
